This weekend "Temptation Island" will be dressed with the royal colors of purple and gold as the Lions of Belize Zone 59 rendezvous in San Pedro to celebrate their 24th Annual Convention. This three-day affair brings together Lion members, relatives and friends to enjoy the achievements of this group who with many others throughout the world form one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations.

All residents and visitors are invited to join the celebrations that will commence tomorrow Friday, April 27th at Central Park. Opening ceremonies will commence at 8:00 p.m. with entertainment by Salsa Caliente, cultural presentations by the five clubs and the introduction and parade of Club Queens. The night will also feature dynamic speakers including the Governor General of Belize, Sir Colville Young and Lion Nina Titleman, District Governor of the Downtown Miami Lions Club. The major event of the evening will undoubtedly be the hospitality booths where each club will give away free "goodies" native to the environment where their club is located.

The fun continues on Saturday with seminars for Lion members,  the election of a new Lions Zone Chairman and Vice Zone Chairman, a ceremony for the new Lions Den office which will be dedicated to the late Lion Alfredito Alamilla and a symbolic community project, in which the Lions will moor six buoys at specific dive spots. In the evening, Central Park will once again be the venue for the Queen's cultural presentations, surprise entertainment and the coronation of the Belize Zone 59 Queen, Miss Luisana Nuñez of San Pedro Town. A convention dance will follow at the Lions Den featuring Wil and the Caribbean Shells.

On Sunday, a special mass will be held at the Roman Catholic Church followed by the Lions Parade of Floats. Immediately after the parade, conventioneers will congregate at Central Park for a beach luncheon and jump-up where awards and prizes will be presented.

If you have not registered yet, you still have time. Registration fees are $30 for Lions, $35 for guests and $20 for youth 12-16 years old. The registration fee will entitle each person to a souvenir package including T-shirt, gifts and a chance to win one of many fabulous prizes amounting to over $3000. Just a small price to pay for the spectacular amount of fun that has been planned for all.

Reigning Queen Luisana Nuñez will also represent the Lions of Zone 59 in the upcoming Istmania Convention to be held May 16th - 20th in Nicaragua. The San Pedro Sun takes this opportunity to welcome Miss San Estevan Lions Queen Rosaura Chan, Miss Stann Creek Lions Queen Mary Martinez, Miss Belmopan Lions Queen Lauren Burn and Miss Belize City Lions Queen Sheena Gentle, all visitors and friends to the 24th Annual Lions Convention.
