Zoila Cano and Mirtha Lanze

San Pedro's natural beauty is definitely what attracts thousands of tourists every year. This, combined with the friendly people and the service they render is what keeps many coming back year after year. Excellent customer service is a necessity if our island is to remain the number one tourist destination in Belize. La Isla Bonita now boasts a variety of businesses, each striving for customer satisfaction. This week we are pleased to feature two hardworking young ladies who with their pleasant personalities attract a large number of customers, both locals and tourists, to their workplace. They are the charming women at Ruby's CafÈ - Zoila Cano and Mirtha Lanze.

Zoila Cano hails from Big Falls Village in Punta Gorda. She enjoyed a happy childhood but by the time she reached her teens, Zoila wondered what life would be like in a more active place in the country. Since most of her family was already living in San Pedro and knowing that job opportunities were available here, Zoila decided to relocate. The lifestyle here was very different from her home, but having family around eased her adaptation. San Pedro was exactly the place she was looking for, so she went in search of a job. Zoila's friendly and charming nature was obvious and she was soon hired at the island's ice cream parlor. After residing on the island for two years, Ms. Cano found it necessary to return home to visit her family. In 1992, she returned to San Pedro and was immediately hired at Ruby's CafÈ. Since then, Zoila has been serving customers with a smile. She works six-days-a-week from 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., giving clients a taste of the southern hospitality she grew up with.

Mirtha Lanze made San Pedro her permanent home seven years ago. Originally from Libertad Village, Corozal, this vibrant and outgoing young lady first visited San Pedro on a summer vacation when she was a young girl. Mirtha discovered "island life" was the ideal way of life for her and did not think twice when her family offered her a chance to move here. As a newcomer to La Isla Bonita, Mirtha took time to relax and get acquainted with her surrounding first. When she felt she was ready to enter the work force she sought employment as a salesperson; a job she kept for two years. Like Zoila, Mirtha also had to leave the island for a short time when one of her relatives from back home fell ill. Upon her return she became employed at Ruby's CafÈ, where she happily greets clients six days-a-week from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Together Zoila and Mirtha, Ruby's "dynamic duo", are the perfect hostesses of this popular cafÈ. Their radiant smiles and amusing conversations always perks up customers as they purchase tasty treats. When asked by the San Pedro Sun what they enjoy most about their jobs they both commented in unison, "We like meeting new people and flirting with the guys." They went on to say that although they have repeat customers everyday, they also enjoy new faces. Speaking about their employers, Zoila and Mirtha stated, "We have no complaints about them. It is always a pleasure for us to come to work because they treat us like part of their family."

Without a doubt Zoila and Mirtha are an asset to Ruby's CafÈ. They are like two peas in a pod when it comes to performing their tasks. With their charisma and wonderful dispositions, they are the perfect example of service with a smile. Zoila and Mirtha are true representatives of the customer service that is welcoming the world to "Our Community."
