Press Release - BECOL - August 27, 2001 -

In accordance with Section 20 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 1995, the Belize Electricity Company Limited (BECOL) advises that it has submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Macal River Upstream Storage Project (MRUSP) to the Department of Environment (DOE). The MRUSP project site is located in the Mountain Pine Ridge area, along the Macal River, upstream of the Guacamallo Bridge, at a site called Chalillo which is 50 miles by road from San Ignacio Town. The project consists of a roller compacted (RCC) dam, a powerhouse at the toe of the dam and a sub-transmission line from the Chalillo site to the existing Mollejon Plant.

The purpose of the project is to provide a water storage reservoir that will be used to produce electricity. Persons wishing to view the EIA can do so at the offices of the Department of the Environment, Ambergris Avenue, Belmopan, or the BECOL offices, Mollejon Plant, Mollejon Road, Benque Viejo or the offices of the Belize Electricity Limited, 2 Miles Northern Highway, Belize City, during normal working hours. Interested persons wishing to conduct reviews of the EIA at BEL's or BECOL's office must call the office in advance to make an appointment. For BEL, telephone 02-70954, ext. 127 and for BECOL, telephone 092-3016. Appointments will be taken between August 28, 2001 and October 1, 2001.

Persons wishing to comment or make representations on the report or the project can do so by contacting the Department of the Environment. The deadline for submitting comments to the DOE is October 1, 2001.

Editor's Note: The San Pedro Sun spoke with Chief Environmental Officer Ismael Fabro who informed that this document will also be available at public libraries in major towns throughout Belize. Along with the EIA, a ledger will be provided for people to sign and comment on their views regarding the document. These should be available in San Pedro Library by next week and will need to be returned to the DOE by September 28th, 2001. Those wishing to write letters may include them with the ledger for return to the DOE or mail them directly in care of the Department of the Environment, Ministry of the Environment, 19 Mayflower St., Belmopan, Belize. This information will then be submitted to the National Environmental Assessment Committee who will meet in early October to make a decision whether to approve the project or not.
