, 2000. He also brings with him 17 years
of experience, previously working for the Belize City Fire Department.
Fire Chief Vaccaro stated that he will continue the
weekly firefighter training held every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and at 3:00
p.m. on Sundays in order to keep volunteers in tip-top shape. Presently, the San
Pedro Fire Department consists of eight trained volunteers, but additional
volunteers are always welcome. As his plan of action, Mr. Vaccaro will soon
begin periodic checks of hotels and other businesses on the island to make
sure they are equipped with the required safety apparatus in case of an
emergency.
For those who were alarmed by the
sounds of sirens last Wednesday, Mr. Vaccaro explained that this is one of many
simulated drills that will be done in the future to test the department's
readiness. These drills will be supervised by a member of the Belize City Fire
Department who will evaluate the local department after each drill. Chief
Vaccaro also hopes to provide this community with periodic fire prevention tips
through the San Pedro Sun.
