Sofia Guerra is crowned Miss Carnival 2001

The kick-off event for the San Pedro Carnival was a big hit as hundreds gathered at Central Park to witness the selection of Miss Carnival 2001. During the course of the evening the attendees had the opportunity to cast their votes for their favorite contestant and engaged in fun games for the entire family. Entertainment was provided by the San Pedro Dance Company and Barbara's Dance Group while Lichi's box provided lively music and the sound system.

    Tension started to build during the final hours of the competition as the votes were being counted and announced. The race was very close but at the last minute it was Sofia Guerra who came out victorious with a grand total of 400,557 points. Kenisha Young came in second place with 313,305 points followed by Jennifer Fiore with 238,123 points and Emmy Marin with 234,476 points.

    Amid thunderous applause the crowd welcomed Sofia Guerra as the new carnival queen who was officially crowned by the reigning Miss San Pedro Adaly Guerrero. Sofia would like to publicly thank all her family, friends and her sponsor, Banyan Bay for the tremendous support and assistance rendered to her during the competition.

    The Carnival Committee would like to remind all residents and visitors that on Saturday, February 24th the long awaited Grand Carnival Parade (Brazilian Style) will take place. Fourteen  bands (carnival groups) have confirmed their participation for this event. All participants are reminded that they need to be in line at Central Park by 2:00 p.m. for preliminary judging. The parade will start at 3:00 p.m. The parade route will go from Central Park on Barrier Reef Drive to the high school area and then down Pescador Drive turning onto Tarpon Street and back onto Barrier Reef Drive ending at  Central Park. Once there, the groups will make stage presentations, followed by an awards ceremony. Judging the parade will be three experienced people from Belize City. The criteria for the judging consists of the following: Originality - 15 points, Craftsmanship - 10 points, Creativity - 15 points, Spirit of carnival mood - 35, On stage presentation - 25 points; for a total of 100 points. The first prize winner in the Senior category will be awarded $1000 and second prize $500. First prize in the Junior category will receive $500 and second prize $200. Certificates of participation will be awarded to each group, as well as awards for Best Organized Group, Best Uniformed Group, etc.

    The thirteen Carnival Bands are: Cultural Heritage of Belize City, Carnival Queen and Princesses, Hideaway, Barbara's Dance Group, ABC Pre-School, San Pedro Dance Company, Isla Bonita Elementary, Little Angel's Pre-School, Island Queens, The San Pedro Garifuna Council, St. Peter's Elementary, Belize Rural South, Salsa Caliente (Recycled Teenagers) and Reef Radio, Maya Island Air and Mr. C's (combined).
