|Children prepare to join the procession
Residents of "La Isla Bonita" paid homage to their patron saint - St. Peter last weekend with traditional religious services and plenty of entertaining activities. Held under the auspices of the San Pedro Town Council, this year's celebrations were successful due to the eager participation of the residents of San Pedro.
The St. Peter's Day festivities were officially opened by Mayor Alberto Nuñez who welcomed visitors and residents to the celebrations. Guest speaker was Minister of Budget Management Hon. Ralph Fonesca. The celebration continued with local entertainment and an all night jump-up at the Old Football Field.
On Saturday morning, June 29th the traditional Fishermen's Mass was celebrated at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church. Close to two hundred men and their male children participated in this celebration. This was followed by a communal breakfast at the Lions Den before the procession of boats took place. These three events were accentuated by the live music of mariachis who played the Mañanitas and other songs in a tribute to St. Peter. On Saturday evening, the celebration continued with a religious procession through the streets of town. This particular event was well-attended and credit must be given to the organizers who encouraged the children to participate in this event, helping instill the traditions of San Pedro in them. After the procession, families congregated at the Old Football Field to witness cultural presentations by the San Pedro Garifuna dancers and San Pedro Dance Company. Children were also delighted by the mechanical rides and games, as well as the tasty treats from the food booths.
On Sunday, June 30th a dart tournament was held on the grounds, as well as a kayak race sponsored by the Ambergris Caye Sports Academy.
The San Pedro Sun salutes the organizers of this year's Dia de San Pedro celebrations for their efforts in keeping our traditions alive.
