The countdown continues for Belize's premier event - the 2002 International Costa Maya Festival scheduled for August 15th - 18th. This four-day event promises to have something for every member of the family: mechanical rides, games, cultural presentations, top-notch performances and of course, the beauty and elegance of the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant. The five Mundo Maya countries have confirmed the participation of the "goddess" representing them in this prestigious event to be held the first night of the festival - Thursday, August 15th. The pageant will be co-conducted by ex-Menudo superstar Johnny Lozada, Miss Costa Maya 2000 Sandra Glower of El Salvador and Miss Costa Maya Belize representative 2001 Melina Diaz.

    The five beauty ambassadors arrived this week and made their first public appearance at Ramon's Village where they were presented with their official sashes on Wednesday evening. On Friday, SEAduced by Belize will transport the bevy of beauties to Altun Ha archeological site. Following a tour of this Belizean landmark, Maruba Resort will host the participants at a luncheon. On Saturday, August 10th the ever-popular Noche Sanpedrana will take place at Rico's Restaurant at The Villas at Banyan Bay. This event gives sponsors, businesspersons and the entire community an opportunity to mingle with these delegates before pageant night. Joining the five representatives during Noche Sanpedrana will be the reigning Costa Maya Queen, Miss Evelyn Lopez of Guatemala. Another guest joining the event will be lovely Dilcia Trejo, Miss San Pedro 2001/2002 who will be the official hostess for the evening.

    The delegates will engage in different tours around the island, aside from spending numerous hours rehearsing for the pageant. The ladies will also be making special appearances at various restaurants and entertainment spots around town. This is when the general public will have a chance to choose their favorite delegate. This year's pageant will certainly be a well-contested one as all the participants are worthy of the title Reina de la Costa Maya. Who is your favorite choice? Following is a short bio on each of the five delegates.

    GUATEMALA - Paula Margarita Alonso Morales currently holds the title of Miss Guatemala Mundo. Miss Alonso is twenty-one years old, a professional model and is currently studying public relations. She practices basketball and enjoys reading, dancing and writing poetry. She collects stuffed animals and photographs, and her favorite music is salsa. Her favorite composer is Ricardo Arjona and the person she admires most is Rigoberta Menchu.

    MEXICO - Nuestra Belleza Nuevo Leon, Elsa Lucia Burgos Perez will represent Mexico at this grand event. Miss Burgos is 22 years old, five feet, six inches tall, and is presently pursuing a degree in industrial design. She is a television program conductor and is bilingual (Spanish and English).

    HONDURAS - Lesly Caballero will proudly represent Honduras. Lesly is the youngest of the five contestants at age seventeen. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. She is five feet, eight inches tall and weighs 105 pounds. She has dark brown eyes, chestnut-colored hair and cinnamon-colored skin. Lesly enjoys playing basketball.

    EL SALVADOR - El Salvador will be represented at the pageant by Señorita San Miguel, Miss Pamela Anette Portillo Cardona. Miss Portillo is twenty years old, five feet, five inches tall, has brown eyes, chestnut-colored complexion, and is pursuing a degree in communications. She admires Julia Roberts and her favorite television program is Temptation Island. Her hobbies are dancing, reading and watching television. Her aspiration in life is to be an important professional with enough power to aid people in need.

    BELIZE - Representing the host country will be Becky Belinda Bernard. Becky is twenty years old and was the second runner-up at the Miss Belize 2001 pageant. She is five feet, eight inches tall, has brown skin, brown hair and brown eyes. Becky's professional aspiration is to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Her hobbies are reading and surfing the web to keep abreast of happenings around the globe.

    This year's International Costa Maya Festival entertainment lineup is as follows: Thursday, August 15th - Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant featuring co-conductor Johnny Lozada. Friday, August 16th - Cultural Fiesta featuring Ballet Folklorico del Instituto Tecnologico de Quintana Roo, Gary y su Grupo Precaucion de Merida, Lico Vadelli cultural group from Guatemala, Ballet de la Universidad Nacional de El Salvador, Cuadro Nacional de Danzas Folkloricas de Honduras, San Pedro Dance Company and Barbara's Dance Group. Saturday, August 17th - International Night featuring actress/singer Maribel Guardia accompanied by Mariachis and Santino's Messengers. Sunday, August 18th - Belize Jump-Up with Santino's Messengers and the Belize Bodybuilding exhibition.

    Tickets for the festival are now on sale for: Season Passes - Adults - $85/Children $40. Day Passes - Adults - $20/Children $10. International Night Passes - Adults - $50/Children $20. Passes are available at Fantasy Garden Restaurant, Amigo Travel, Emerita Muñoz, Wally's Electrical, Sea Turtle Gift Shop, Nellie's Laundromat, Ambergris Store, Island Magic, Lala's Store, Excalibur Tours and Milo's Store.
