Annual Beli-kin Spectacular. Master of Ceremonies Adrian Heusner of the Belize Game Fishing Association announced the awards during a ceremony and barbecue held last Saturday evening at the Belize Yacht Club in San Pedro Town.
According to Mr. Heusner, "The weather was perfect and the fish were biting," during the two-day tournament. Taking first place and $3,000 was the team from Runaway II captained by Samir Chebat. The second place winning crew won $2,000 and took to the sea in Freedom captained by Hilberto "Hilly Boo" Lara. The third place prize of $1,500 was given to the fishermen from Get Some and their captain, Adrian Heusner. Fourth place winnings of $750 were given to sponsor Barry Bowen and his crew of the Lancha Verde. Coming in fifth and receiving $500 were the anglers of Leolee and Captain Robert Hanggi.
Although the 500-pound marlin, worth $50,000 could not be caught, plenty more fish were. The heaviest specie, its weight, the angler's name and boat on which the fish was caught are as follows: Blue Marlin - 164.5 pounds - Jalil Bedran of Runaway II; Wahoo - 31.5 pounds - Adrian Heusner of Get Some; Dolphin - 22 pounds - Karen Olsen of Lara; Tuna - 11 pounds - Hon. Ralph Fonseca of Big Momma; Kingfish - 55 pounds (new tournament record) - Noel McCord of Star; and Barracuda - 20 pounds - Artemio Torres of Sea Boots.
Receiving the honor for Top Female Angler was San Pedro's Jennie Staines from the crew of Freedom who described the tournament as "Spectacular - just like the name says!" Ms. Staines reeled in three Wahoo and one Dorado for her prize. The Top Male Angler went to Jalil Bedran of Runaway II.
This year's Calcutta was shared by Samir Chebat with first place winnings of $8,460 and Hilly Boo Lara who took home $4,230 for second place.
A total of eight qualifying Blue Marlins were caught. The boats and the weight in pounds are as follows: Runaway II - 164.5, Freedom - 140, Get Some - 126.5, Lancha Verde - 125, Leolee - 123.5, Highlander - 121, Gia Luz - 118, and Runaway II - 112.
