It is official now; both political parties in San Pedro have announced their slate for the upcoming Town Council elections scheduled for March 5th, 2003. Candidates from both the People's United Party and United Democratic Party have started their campaign in hopes of getting the most votes and seats in the next town administration. The fourteen candidates are comprised of a cross section of people who feel they can contribute to the proper development of San Pedro. The following is a short biography of each aspiring candidate.

People's United Party

   Mayoral Candidate - Alex Nuñez. Alex is a teacher at San Pedro High School and Junior College. He is married and the father of one child. Mr. Nuñez is also a Justice of the Peace.

    Murlene "Mel" Spain hails from Cayo, San Ignacio and is a businesswoman by profession. She is married and the mother of six children. Ms. Spain is presently the Deputy Mayoress of San Pedro Town and a member of the San Pedro Lions Club.

   Alex Jason Noralez is originally from Dangriga in the Stann Creek District. He is a teacher at San Pedro High School, married and the father of one child. Mr. Noralez is also a devoted member of the San Pedro Garifuna Council. 

    Baldemar Graniel Sr. is a well-known businessman, married and the father of four children. Mr. Graniel served as the Mayor of San Pedro Town from 1991-93 and Deputy Mayor in 2000. He is presently the Chairman of the Justice of the Peace Association, a San Pedro Town councilor, and an active member of the San Pedro Lions Club.

    Santiago "Santos" Acosta is originally from Corozal, married and the father of two children. He is the owner of Salty Dog Gift Shop and the general manager of Toucan and Belizean Attidude Gift Shops. Mr. Acosta is also presently a member of the San Pedro Town Council.

    Omar Arceo is a tour guide, married and the father of two children. Omar Arceo is a Justice of the Peace and is presently a member of the San Pedro Town Council.

    Pedro "Sonny" Vasquez is a businessman by profession, married and the father of four children. He is a Justice of the Peace and presently a member of the San Pedro Town Council.

United Democratic Party

    Mayoral Candidate - Maria Elsa Paz. Elsa brings to the UDP team 17 years of business experience as the owner and manager of Sea Fan Gift Shop, a ladies' gym, an apartment complex, and as co-owner of Big Daddy's discothËque. She has served as the Chairperson of the Trade Licensing Board and was also a member of the Belize Chamber of Commerce.

    Severo Guerrero Sr. is a recognized tour guide by profession, married and the proud father of two children. He has served his community as a town councilor and is a Senior Justice of the Peace. Mr. Guerrero is an active member of the San Pedro Lions Club.

    Juan Jose Alamilla is an electrical and refrigeration technician, married and the father of three children. Mr. Alamilla has held the position of President of the Ambergris Caye Housing and Planning Committee.

    Erminia Muschamp Salazar is married and has seven children. Originally from Toledo, Mrs. Salazar has been living in San Pedro for the past 16 years. She is a landlord and a housewife.

    Justiniano "Nano" Guerrero is a skilled outboard motor mechanic and a tour guide. He is married and the father of two children. He previously served on the Liquor Licensing Board and is presently an active member of the San Pedro Tourist Guide Association.

    Nesto Gomez is a professional tour guide and for the past eighteen years has promoted the sport of fly fishing in San Pedro. He was featured on two ESPN fly fishing shows and has appeared in many prestigious fly fishing magazines. He has been active in community events, especially fundraisers for the less fortunate. He is married and the father of two children.

    Joseph Elijio is originally from Dangriga in the Stann Creek District but moved to San Pedro with his family when he was only a year old. He is presently the Assistant Manager of Seven Seas Resort and has held the post of President of the San Pedro Garifuna Council for the past three years. Mr. Elijio is the proud father of four children.
