The fish might not have been biting for some but
the crew of the Abyss celebrated last
weekend as they were awarded Champion Boat at the finish of the
13th Annual
Esso/Radisson Billfish Tournament. Captain Richard "Bo" Sjogreen was
responsible for navigating the winning crew comprised of Pie Marin, Dr.
Victor Lizarraga and island resident Byron Warren. As well, San Pedro's
own Jennie Staines came away with the tournament's Heaviest Tuna at 11.5
pounds aboard the boat Outreach.
Twenty-three boats took part in the
tournament. An awards ceremony took place on Sunday at the Radisson Fort
George Hotel and Marina in Belize City. Based on points given for
billfish only, the following anglers received prizes: Heaviest (only)
Blue Marlin - 149.5 pounds - Pie Marin aboard the
Abyss; Heaviest (only) White Marlin -
46.5 pounds - Dr. Victor Lizarraga aboard the
Abyss; Heaviest Wahoo - 47 pounds -
Jorge Castillo aboard Lara; Heaviest
Dolphin (Dorado) - 40.5 pounds - James Nisbett aboard
Benchaela. Also aboard
Benchaela was Benny Feinstein who reeled
in a 46.5 pound Wahoo to win the Top Junior Angler award.
The Abyss also shared
the Calcutta prize of $15,900 with Ms. Suzanne Wilken. The next Belize
Game Fishing Association tournament will be the
2nd Annual Fun Weekend
Fiesta sponsored by Federal Express scheduled for sometime this
summer.
