Carrie, Michael and Marty O'Farrell
|
San Pedro residents applaud the people who are
willing to support efforts to control crime on our island. Neighborhood
watch groups and crime committees serve to make the island as crime free
as possible. This week, The San Pedro
Sun would like to introduce to you two people who want
to see that positive changes happen, Marty and Carrie O'Farrell of The
Palms.
Marty was born on September
26 th, 1960 to parents
Jerry and Gloria O'Farrell, in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in a
family of three brothers and one sister. Carrie was born on October
25th, 1965 in Oakland,
California, to parents Jim and Carol Greene; her family consists of an
older brother and a younger sister.
After graduating from West Seattle High School
in 1976, Marty became a singer in a band and enjoyed this occupation
until 1992. During this time, he became the father of a baby girl,
Britnie who is now 18 years old. Marty also started a metal recycling
company, "Independent Metals Recycling" in Seattle, which his family
presently manages. On the side, he worked in real estate, buying and
selling property.
Carrie started modeling when she was only 16.
After graduating from American High School in California, she was
employed as an assistant manager in a men's clothing store for three
years before her modeling career "took off". Modeling took Carrie as far
as India and she participated in numerous fashion shows, catalog and
magazine shoots. She also entered and won the title of "Miss Marin
County" and participated in the "Miss California" pageants. This work
also led her to a job working in a fine jewelry store for a few years.
Realizing she had natural people skills, her career path next led Carrie
to a career as a flight attendant and she did this for a little more than
three years. In April of 1992 she met her "soul mate," Marty. The couple
were married exactly four and a half years later on September
28 th, 1996.
Since Marty and Carrie both enjoy
diving, they learned about San Pedro through dive magazines. So, after
getting married, they decided to visit San Pedro on their honeymoon
vacation. From the time they first arrived, Marty and Carrie knew they
were in love with the island and its people. In 1997, they visited again,
and this time, they bought a condo at "The Palms". For the next two
years, the couple spent every vacation in San Pedro.
In 1999, they finally decided to stay in San
Pedro for a while during which time, Marty did underwater videos for
Ramon's and Amigos del Mar dive shops. Meanwhile, Carrie made jewelry
such as necklaces and bracelets, and sold them under an umbrella in front
of The Palms. One year later, they returned to Seattle to finish building
their house, and discovered at that time, that Carrie was pregnant. After
baby Michael arrived, Marty and Carrie made up their minds to return to
San Pedro to live permanently and so, in 2002, they sold their house and
moved to Ambergris Caye.
Upon their return, Marty and Carrie were offered
the position of managing The Palms. Reluctant at first, they were finally
convinced to take on the responsibility. Fifteen months later, they still
enjoy this job and plan to continue doing it for a few more years.
Marty also represents The Palms on the Citizen's
Safety Committee. From the knowledge he has gained at these meetings, he
recently devised a plan to establish a police "Officer of the Month"
award. Observing that police officers are usually paid much
lower wages than other occupations, Marty came up with a way the
community could support these men and women who help reduce the level of
crime on the island. He told The San Pedro
Sun that along with The Palms, Banana Beach Resort,
Pauly's Pizza, Sweet Basil Gourmet Café and Rico's Restaurant at Banyan
Bay are the first businesses to sponsor this objective, beginning this
month. Marty hopes that others will follow their lead.
Marty's hobbies include doing underwater diving
videos. He also creates promotional videos for some businesses such as
Graniel's, Paradise Villas, and SEAduced, to name a few. Carrie enjoys
painting and making jewelry. The couple commented, "In our spare time, we
like to dive, and spend time together as a family."
Marty and Carrie plan to eventually buy a house in San
Pedro, because they love it here. The island's beauty, warm climate,
quiet life and the friendly people are some of the many reasons why
living in San Pedro makes them so happy. "People are not as materialistic
here; it's not as rushed as life in the US," they both agreed.
Marty and Carrie are people with great hearts,
always ready to give to others, and help in whatever way they can, to
make San Pedro a better place. For this reason and more, islanders are
pleased to welcome "expats" like the O'Farrells into "Our
Community."
