Peace Corp Volunteer Kristen Stelljes

Peace Corp Volunteer Kristen Stelljes recently arrived in San Pedro to join forces with Green Reef Environmental Institute. A graduate of Brandeis University in the United States, she will be assisting Green Reef with several projects over the next two years.

Kristen has made quite a climactic change coming to the island from Waltham, Massachusetts in the northeast corner of the US. At Brandeis, she earned a degree in Philosophy with a "minor" in environmental studies. As her first assignment at Green Reef, she will assist with the environmental education for the ongoing Manatee Project. Also, to help her integrate into the northern communities of Belize, Kristen just completed a six-week Spanish course in Guatemala.

"I always wanted to travel abroad, and hope to do development work sometime in the future," said Kristen. "This was a good time in my life to do both and Peace Corp provided the opportunity," she continued.

Green Reef President "Mito" Paz welcomes yet another Peace Corp volunteer to his organization. He commented, "We look forward to working with Kristen and hope that this experience is equally rewarding for her."

Hopefully, by spending the next two years on Ambergris Caye, Kristen will also be able to accomplish another of her goals - completing her open water dive certification.

On behalf of the community, The San Pedro Sun welcomes Kristen Stelljes to "La Isla Bonita," and thanks her for volunteering to help improve our environment.
