anniversary
celebration. This year, the Lions of "La Isla Bonita" opted for a more
informal ceremony to commemorate this joyous occasion. Honoring the Club
during their anniversary costume party was Belize Lions Zone 59 Chairman
Lion Alberto "Beto" Mahler of Belize City, as well as visiting Lions from
Belize City, Belmopan and San Estevan.
During the anniversary program, Lion Felix Ayuso was
presented with a commemorative membership (increase) pin for aiding in
the growth of the Belize Lions family last year. The San Pedro Lions Tail
Twister Melanie Paz then tickled the crowd's funny bones as she humored
the audience with some very comical jokes. The San Pedro Dance Company
also performed entertaining dance presentations and two raffles were
drawn during the evening. The first prize (a toaster) was won by Angie
Ellis and the second prize (a blender) was won by David Gonzalez.
The Belize Lions Zone Chairman Alberto
Mahler had the distinct pleasure of offering the anniversary toast.
During his remarks, the Zone Chairman stated, "San Pedro is a strong and
dynamic Lions Club - a model Club; a Club whose members have put aside
their differences in the interest of their community, the island of San
Pedro." Lion Mahler went on to salute the Club's four Melvin Jones
Fellows - Abel Guerrero Sr., Edilberto "Beto" Marin, Celi McCorkle and
Alfredito Alamilla (deceased). He also saluted and toasted the founding
members who had the vision to start the San Pedro Lions Club, but most
importantly, those who had not lost that vision and are still active
members today. He saluted Lions Abel Guerrero Sr., Edilberto Marin,
Alberto Nuñez, Ramon Nuñez Sr., Felipe Paz Sr., Pedro Salazar Sr., Angel
Nuñez and Francisco Verde.

Following the "serenata" birthday song, the gathering
enjoyed a scrumptious dinner followed by dance music provided by the San
Pedro High School "Tribal Sounds."
As noted earlier, this year's celebration featured a
costume party and those in disguise vied for first prize - a 19-inch
color television. After midnight, the three semi-finalists were chosen by
popular applause from the crowd. In the end, it was the Headless Man
(Velie Williams) who took home the first prize. The other two finalists
were Dancing Mariachi (Bobby Lopez of Belmopan) and the Vampire Stripper
(Felix Ayuso). The crowd then danced the night away and enjoyed
fellowship until the wee hours of the
morning.
On Sunday, October
26
th the Lions of
Belize Zone 59 congregated at the San Pedro Lions Den for a scheduled
Cabinet meeting. Lions from throughout Belize took this opportunity to
discuss important matters concerning Lionism and ways of recruiting new
members and reinforcing the Clubs. Each Club representative gave a full
report of their activities and projects held. It was stated that the next
Cabinet meeting will be held in Belmopan on November
30th, 2003, following
their Club's anniversary celebration.
