This tourist season Tropic Air will officially begin
operating later flights from Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA)
to Ambergris Caye extending their flight schedule an extra hour. For the
past few weeks, Tropic Air's Chief Pilot Mike Kuhn has scheduled practice
landings and take-offs with the company's pilots in preparation for the
additional evening flights. Tropic's last scheduled flight from the
International Airport was previously at 6:00 p.m. or until sunset. Now,
the scheduled closing time has changed to 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Kuhn explained that this extra hour gives Tropic
Air the opportunity to transport their passengers in comfort and safety,
without having to rush their flights. Usually, tourists who arrived after
6:00 p.m. would be provided with hotel accommodations paid by their
international airline carrier. "In previous years, we have had situations
where customers were left behind at the International Airport, but they
experienced a difficult time in locating transportation and hotels to
their liking. Now, all that is going to change since we have the
convenience of late flights," said Mr. Kuhn.
The Department of Civil Aviation has granted Tropic
Air permission to fly until 7:00 p.m. between the dates of October
15th to April
30th. It was stated
that during these months the skies retain sufficient sunlight to fly
until 7:00 p.m. as compared to other months when the sun sets at 5:30
p.m. and the skies are dark by 6:00 p.m. The company is only allowed to
use their Cessna Caravans for these late flights, and lights have already
been installed on the San Pedro runway to guide incoming planes.
