Seemingly endless complaints are circulating throughout Belize regarding the poor Internet and E-mail service currently being provided by Belize Telecommunications Limited (BTL). Several inquiries were made by The San Pedro Sun over the past few weeks into this communication situation, and finally some answers have been received to the questions plaguing customers.

According to sources at BTL, they are hoping to have most of these problems solved by the end of this week. Technicians have been installing updated versions of "anti-spam" software on all of the company's servers in an effort to contain the amount of  "spam" or junk E-mail that is inundating accounts. Reportedly, the original anti-spam program that was installed on BTL's mail "hubs" (the system which collects and filters incoming mail) was blocking good as well as bad E-mails. Once this situation was brought to their attention, BTL began to correct the problem. According to the source, BTL received an updated version of the anti-spam software early in the week and has already started blocking the well-known spam mail that frequently infests hubs and servers.

The time spent installing updated software on servers and hubs explains another frequent challenge - sending or receiving E-mail. While technicians are servicing these systems, they often report that "the server is down," and subsequently, mail cannot be sent or received during that time.

Following up on a conversation from last week regarding returned mail from aol.com, the source confirmed that BTL representatives had been in contact with the administrators from various Internet providers to explain the technical difficulties BTL was experiencing. As of press time on Tuesday, it was stated that there had been no further complaints of returned mail since last week.
