Ambergris Caye has developed at a very fast rate. This beautiful
tourist destination now has countless restaurants, bars and hotels, all
which need to have furnishing and other items transported to the island.
Years ago, San Pedro residents had difficulty getting things shipped from
the mainland. Cargo could take weeks to arrive. As time went by, people
found easier and speedier ways to transport items. One of the people
responsible for making these positive changes is Abel Guerrero Jr. of
Krystal Shipping.
Abel was born on December 15th, 1960 in the small fishing village of
San Pedro to Martha and Abel Guerrero Sr. The eldest of four children
(three boys and one girl), Abel enjoyed his childhood growing up under the
warm sun, fishing in the Caribbean Sea, and flourishing in the carefree
island life.
Abel attended and graduated from both San Pedro Roman Catholic School
and San Pedro High School before furthering his education in Belize City.
There, he studied Business Management at the Belize Technical College. He
recalls participating in all kinds of sports but said he enjoyed volleyball
the most.
When Abel returned to the island, he was first offered a job at
Victoria House Resort. There he was a "Jack of all trades," engaging in
various tasks, from bartending "on up." Eventually, Abel earned the
position of general manager. It was a job he happily and proudly performed
for the next 11 years.
On May 18th, 1980, Abel married the love of his life, Zeida NuŅez.
Together, the couple have three children: Kristian (22), Melina (19), and
Gabriella (15); and one grandchild, Gian (3).
In 1992, Abel took over the management of Marino's Bar, renovating it
and overseeing its daily activities. He also assumed the day-to-day
operations of Krystal Shipping, assisting its counterpart, Mash
Construction Supply, as well. "This is a job I enjoy since it gives me the
time I need to spend with my family," Abel stated.
In 1991, Abel was elected as a member of the San Pedro Town Council, a
position that gave him an opportunity to help his community. As a
councilor, Abel was responsible for the Sports and Youth committee which
organized basketball and soccer matches. He stated that he made certain
that all the activities were as fun and as frequent as possible because,
"Kids need something to entertain themselves; to keep them busy and away
from drugs and mischief." Abel is presently a member of the Ambergris Caye
Traffic Control Committee. Whenever possible he also donates shipping
services to the island's many charities and community organizations.
In his free time, Abel enjoys spending time with his friends, a group
who call themselves "El Trunkito Beach Club." They spend Sunday evenings by
the beach reminiscing about days gone by. He is also very proud to say that
on Sunday afternoons, their whole family makes it a point to get together
at his parents' house for lunch. Laughter can be heard as brothers,
sisters, nephews, nieces and grandchildren all gather around the table for
a weekly "family reunion," to discuss individual plans and what is going on
in each other's lives.
While others spend all their energy trying to climb the ladder of
success, Abel says he is happy just to spend time with his family. Content
with the way his life is going, it is "Krystal" clear Abel Guerrero is
proud to be a man who has a true sense of family values and strives to keep
them alive in "Our Community."
