Many vehicular drivers and residents of San Pedro Town, were
surprised last week to find a part of the street fenced in front of
Exotic Caye Beach Resort (Hotel Playador) and Barefoot Iguana,
constricting passage at this section of Coconut Drive. This
restructuring made an already accident-prone area, even more
treacherous as not one warning sign was posted on this narrowing
street.
In an interview with The San Pedro Sun, Mayor Elsa Paz reported
that after surveying the area, she found the owners of the fenced area
had every right to do this. She stated that re-surveying continues to
ensure that the appropriate 30-feet of road access is regained. In the
meantime, as prescribed by Belize law, the owners of the corner lots
should give way 10 feet of land to be used for the road. According to
Mayor Paz, the owner of the fenced lot and Barefoot Iguana have already
agreed to this. In addition, the present BTL distribution box will also
be removed and relocated to an area nearby.
Following the re-surveying of this area, the San Pedro Traffic
Committee, the San Pedro Town Council and the Ambergris Caye Housing
and Planning Committee, will meet to make the necessary decisions to
regain the road and safe access of this area. In the meantime, Mayor
Paz asks all drivers to exercise caution in this area.
