In an effort to provide affordable and nutritional lunches for
local school students, approximately 200 friends and residents of
Ambergris Caye recently united to do their part. As a result, by the
beginning of the next school year, San Pedro Roman Catholic School
students should be eating their lunches on school grounds, thanks to a
privately funded "School Lunch Program."
In May, the San Pedro Social Club of Houston, Texas, held their 2nd
annual fundraiser, which raised US$20,000 to be used specifically for
this program. Organizer Vicki Nichols of Caribe Island Resort told The
Sun, "This is just Phase I of the project. This year, the lunch program
will be catered and brought to the school. Next year, our goal is to
raise $50,000 so that we can afford to build a proper school cafeteria
and lunches can be prepared on site."
Ms. Nichols also noted that country western performer Kevin Black
was responsible for a lot of the money that was raised. "Kevin was
introduced to Ambergris Caye by Dee Thomas (island resident and SP
Social Club member) and he just fell in love with the kids here," she
commented. Following his first visit, Black offered to assist the SP
Social Club and contacted President Ernie Brannon about raising money
at the next fundraiser in Texas.
At an appearance last week in San Pedro, Mr. Black proudly
announced that the San Pedro Social Club of Houston, Texas had raised a
whopping $20,000US to use for the SPRCS School Lunch Program.
On behalf of the community, especially the students and staff at
San Pedro Roman Catholic School, "hats off" to the SP Social Club and
Entertainer Kevin Black for this generous contribution to the children
of "La Isla Bonita."
