Sand dredged from the large lagoon on the southwest corner of Ambergris Caye
was destined for export until Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr. put a
stop to it.

Rumors circulating Ambergris Caye were one of anger and distaste - sand
excavated or dredged from our beautiful island was being exported by our San
Pedro Town Council (SPTC) to a nearby caye.
The San Pedro Sun decided to investigate and discovered that indeed sand
was intended to be exported out of San Pedro Town, but the plans were put to
a stop. After speaking with Area Representative for Belize Rural South
Manuel Heredia Jr., The Sun learned that SPTC is not the only holder of an
excavation permit on the island. The Town Council's permit is a public
permit and it allows them to dredge sand which can be used to repair streets
and may also be sold to private businesses and/or individuals to refill
their land or business property. However, the investigation found that SPTC
was not the one exporting sand out of the island, but one of the private
permit holders.
Area Representative Heredia spoke to the private permit holder, and the
sand intended to leave San Pedro never left the island.
