Lucila Saldivar of Maestro Reyes School of Knowledge (MRSK) proved to be the Island’s best speller in the National Spelling Bee Competition that was held last Friday March 4th at the Lions Den. Lucila won the competition by correctly spelling the word “lectern” which means “a tall desk that serves as a support for the books and notes of a standing speaker.” Placing a close second was Stefan Solorzano of The Island Academy.

A total of six (6) schools participated in this contest, the schools and their representatives are Rocio Ruiz and Kaidy Duarte from Lydia’s Institute of Fine Education; Jamila Harmouch and Stefan Solorzano from Island Academy; Heidi Santos and SherryLynn Bodden from San Pedro Roman Catholic School; Gabriela Miranda and Pedro Ash from The New Horizon Academy; Kiana Coba and Alfonso Wiltshire from Isla Bonita Elementary and Raquel Perez and Lucila Saldivar from Maestro Reyes School of Knowledge.

In an interview with The San Pedro Sun, Lucila Saldivar, exclaimed with joy that she “feels great” and promises to represent San Pedro as best she can in the Belize District Competition to be held in Belize City. “I will try as best I can to bring the title home.” This proves to be quite a task that will require dedication and a lot of preparation, because she will be going up against all the other districts best spellers. The date for this event has not yet been determined.

The staff of The San Pedro Sun joins the rest of the community in applauding Lucila Saldivar and Stefan Solorzano for a job well done and wishes them the best of luck at the District Competition.
