The San Pedro Police Department has gone “high-tech” with the addition of a special forensics technician to the squad of police officers. Although not as sophisticated as portrayed on TV shows like “CSI”, the new officer will bring new skills to the local police force in order to help apprehend and convict criminals.

Jason Reneau has worked for the Belize Police Department for three years. Prior to that, he worked for ten years with the Department of Corrections. “This experience has helped me to understand the criminal mind,” said Reneau.

Reneau has had much training in the field of criminal forensic, including studying with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). His job will be to prevent or “contain” a crime scene from becoming “contaminated,” and to collect evidence, including finger printing. He will even be able to collect DNA samples that can be analyzed in a laboratory in Belize City.

Reneau says that with the help of forensic data, there is a better chance to apprehend and convict criminals. “Our goal is to minimize crime in San Pedro,” Reneau told The San Pedro Sun.
