Shark Ray Alley, beautiful snorkeling site located inside the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, receives countless visitors throughout the year. However, in recent months this site has been marred with disaster.

On January 10th, 2006, a snorkler, part of a group of nine tourists, experienced difficulties in the water while snorkeling. 65-year-old John Varry was rushed to the Caye Caulker Village Clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Varry was at Shark Ray Alley with his sister and brother-in-law when apparently he suffered the deadly heart attack. The group was part of the Carnival Cruise Line Ship Legend. The tour guide leading the tourists, Bugbia Aguilar told police officers that Varry began experiencing difficulties in the water.

In November, John Drest disappeared while snorkeling in this same area. The 68-year-old’s body was never recovered. At that time, relatives blamed the incident on negligence on the part of the tour guide and his company.
