On Wednesday, January 25th, 2005 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a team from the San Pedro Police Department spearheaded a patrol on the north side of Ambergris Caye up to Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve. Arriving at the point at 3:30 a.m., the officers encountered an American male sleeping in an abandoned house which belonged to the ranger. The said individual was questioned and he informed officers that he swam from X’calak to Ambergris Caye.
The said individual was escorted to the San Pedro Police Department where he was formally charged by the Immigration Officer stationed in San Pedro. The crime Karl Ian Snyder was charged with was: (1) Failure to produce a Visitor’s Permit on demand. He was fined $2,000 plus a $5 court fee, all to be paid forthwith otherwise it would mean a six-month imprisonment.
Checks were made through the Interpol Office and San Pedro officers discovered that Snyder was wanted in Missouri, USA for various offenses. Snyder has been remanded to Hattieville Prison where he awaits extradition.
