On Saturday, William Douglas Campbell walked out of Belize City’s Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital only to be escorted to San Pedro Town where he would be officially arrested and charged for the murder of his friend, Honduran National 39-year-old Danilo Villatoro.

US National, 66-year-old Campbell, arrived on San Pedro and was transported to the Police Department where he remained for the rest of the weekend. He was officially arrested and charged on Sunday for the crimes of 1) murder; 2) (2) counts of possession of unlicensed firearms – a 16-gauge shotgun and a.38 rifle; and 3) (2) counts of possession of unlicensed ammunition – 65 live rounds for the 16-gauge shotgun and 53 live rounds of .38.

On Monday, Campbell appeared before San Pedro Magistrate’s Court and since murder is an indictable case, he will be tried in Belize City’s Supreme Court. Campbell’s next hearing has been set for March 31st, until then he has been remanded to Hattieville Prison where he is still recovering from a gun shot wound. He has sought legal counsel and is not cooperating with the police investigation.

Since Campbell is uncooperative, it is still unknown what happened on February 3rd, at Campbell’s Tres Cocos residence. Police investigations have revealed that both Villatoro and Campbell were the only two people in the residence at the time of the incident. Since both men had been having marital problems and their wives had left them, it is believed that they were drinking heavily that day and decided to end their lives. Campbell allegedly shot Villatoro, who died of a single gunshot wound to his left ear, and then Campbell apparently shot himself on the chest. Campbell was rushed to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital via air ambulance where he remained until Saturday.
