The San Pedro Marina, at the southwest side of the island off the New San Pablo (DFC) Subdivision

San Pedro barge operators received a letter from the San Pedro Town Council informing them that they had until July 20th to move from the main pier located in the center of town to the main marina, located south of DFC Subdivision. As previously reported by The San Pedro Sun, this is not the first time that the operators have been asked to move. The last time that it happened, barge captains soon realized that entering the new marina was far from easy. Among the various reasons was the depth of the lagoon, the channel to enter is too narrow and the fact that only two to three barges can dock at the pier without blocking the exit. Now that they only have approximately two months to move what is being done to fix the problems so that the marina can be functional?

In an interview with Town Administrator Patricia Verde, The San Pedro Sun discovered that the marina falls under the jurisdiction of the Belize Port Authority (BPA) and therefore it is their [BPA’s] responsibility to make all needed renovations.

In an interview with Chairman of Belize Ports Authority Fred Hunter Sr., The San Pedro Sun discovered that indeed renovations to the marina are in the process of being made. Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr., along with BPA representatives, visited San Pedro Town and paid a visit to the marina. According to Honorable Heredia, BPA has acquired the services of Cisco Construction to make the needed changes. Although it has been two weeks since BPA visited, Area Representative Heredia stated that he will make a follow-up call to determine the status of their renovation plans. The Sun will report on their plans in next week’s edition.
