Liliana receives her cape, scepter and crown during the official coronation ceremony which jumpstarted the September Celebrations in San Pedro.

The September 10th parade was quite festive, and already people are anticipating the Independence Day Parade!

A large crowd gathered at the Ambergris Divers dock to witness the weigh in, and several eager helpers were on hand to help.

The top boat of the competition was “Jaqueline”, captained by Tino Gonzalez. The captain and crew cozy up to Miss San Pedro after being announced the first place winners, having brought in a whopping 363 pounds of fish.

Fish everywhere! These young boys help carry fish to the weigh in!

Reef Radio’s Dj Kandiman (center), celebrated his birthday with family and friends at Fido’s Sandbar.

The lively party at Fiso's Sandbar provided great entertainment, including a punta contest which many enjoyed.

The island’s eight best spellers went head to head in three rounds of competition, but in the end, Ismael Kay placed first, Geraldin Garcia second and Ahmed Harmouch placed third.

September 10th is celebrated countrywide as a day to honor the battle which occurred in St. Georges Caye. During this holiday, San Pedro Town rejoices in its patriotism and took the opportunity to coronate its Miss San Pedro 2006/07 Liliana Nuñez.

The festivities kicked off with Miss Nuñez and the outgoing Queen Miss Norma Leticia Lara being escorted into Central Park and up on the stage, where they joined the other Miss San Pedro delegates, Amber Ayala, Jamera Craft and Amalia Cal. Mayor Elsa Paz welcomed all those who had gathered for this special ceremony and welcomed Miss Lara to perform the official coronation. The crowd cheered as Miss Nuñez accepted her responsibilities as the new beauty ambassador of “La Isla Bonita,” as well as accepting her crown, sash, scepter and cape.

After the official ceremonies ended, the fire engine sounded its horn signaling the commencement of the parade. Miss Nuñez and the rest of the delegates, along with Miss Lara were escorted to their places on the beautifully decorated float. The parade took off and delighted people as it made its way through the main streets of town.

San Pedro was a buzz with activity as many beach parties and barbecues were held in honor of the holiday. The park had food sales and great music, while Caliente and Pier Lounge had their annual barbecue, where people hung out waiting for the big catches of the fishing tournament to come in. Throughout the day, there were foods and drinks galore. The Caliente tent kept all beach and party goers in the mood. Delicious barbecue, ceviches, and drinks were served to everyone’s delight. Pier Lounge also did their part in keeping everyone’s “whistle” wet.

v Fido’s Sandbar celebrated not only the 10th, but Reef Radio’s Dj Kandiman’s birthday. People hung out by the pool, enjoyed the music of the various dj’s present and danced the day away. Not to mention, loved the finger-licking barbecue and tasty drinks being prepared. Watersports were also part of the big day, yes; Fido’s Sandbar was also a “rocking” place to be.

As an added note, Wednesday, September 13th, the primary schools on the island held a spelling bee at Central Park as part of the September festivities. Ismael Kay placed first, Geraldin Garcia second and Ahmed Harmouch placed third. Good job to everyone who prepared the students for the spelling bee, and kudos to all participants.

All in all it was a fabulous St. George’s Caye Day. See you for the block party and festivities of the 21st. Don’t miss it!!!
