On Saturday, October 21st, 2006, the San Pedro Lion Club proudly celebrated its 31st year of existence. With Lion members arriving from Belize City and Belmopan, it was truly a night of glorious celebration.

Despite the poor attendance, those present had a wonderful night which officially kicked off with Master of Ceremonies Lion Angel Nuñez calling the meeting to order. After the singing of the National Anthem and an invocation by Lay Minister Lucio Guerrero the meeting took off.

MC Lion Nuñez read the agenda of the first installation of members in 1973 which took place at Marino’s Bar. “Since then the San Pedro Lions Club has been doing great deeds in the community,” he commented.

The Welcome Address was delivered by President Stephen Manuel. “Today, 31 years later we stand strong and confident that we have and will continue to make a difference in our community. Tonight is not only a celebration of what we as Lions have accomplished but it is also a commitment to what we can accomplish in the future.”

The next item on the agenda was the June/October 2006 club report by Lion Secretary Kainie Manuel. In her speech she commented on the five month accomplishments including the picnic held in honor of the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, trips organized to Caye Caulker Village to try to revive the Lionism spirit on La Isla Cariñosa, work-a-thons held at both the Holy Cross Anglican School and the San Pedro Roman Catholic School, and working hand in hand with the Government of Belize to upgrade the services provided by the San Pedro PolyClinic II, among others.

Guest Speaker for the joyous night was Zone 59 Chairman Lion John Wongsam of the Belize City Lions Club. He congratulated all San Pedro Lions, “a very dynamic group.” He urged them to keep moving forward and to keep prospering the way that they have been doing for the past 31 years.

Lion Beto Mahler of the Belize City Lions Club, Zone Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer offered the Anniversary Toast. “Despite its problems, problems which every Lions Club in every part of the world faces, problems which at times appear insurmountable, problems which have caused other clubs to break up, this club, the San Pedro Lions Club has always found a way to solve their problems. […] The toast which I propose is in recognition of the founding members who had the vision to not only start this club but who, over these 31 years, have not lost that vision.”

After a lively performance by Lion Queen Delsie Graniel and the Sandungueros, Queen Graniel delivered the Vote of Thanks.

Through the night three lucky attendees won raffle prizes, a toaster courtesy of Castillo’s Hardware (Vicenta Manuel), a dinner at Papi’s Diner (Lion Ali Kisling of the Belmopan Lions Club) and a pair of earrings courtesy of Lion Mel Spain (Lion Nita Marin of the San Pedro Lions Club).

A delicious turkey dinner was served and although the function had poor attendance those present enjoyed the great music provided by Memo and the Rompe Raja Band until the wee hours. It was truly a delightful time had by all.
