Letter sent by Right Honorable Said Musa in response to a letter originally sent by the Business Community requesting assistance to repair the roads of San Pedro.

On December 18th, 2006, business owners met at the San Pedro Lions Den, where after much discussion on the deplorable road conditions, they signed a letter addressed to Prime Minister Said Musa requesting much needed assistance.

The business community of Ambergris Caye hereby urgently seeks the government’s assistance in addressing this grave matter no later than January 15th, 2007. […] we [business community] are prepared to work hand in hand with central and local government in order to jump start the process that will lead to the paving of all our major roadways no later than February 1st, 2007, and last week, January 2nd, 2007, Honorable Musa responded.

After meeting with the core business owners that initiated the meeting, Minister of Tourism Godfrey Smith has promised assistance in the form of an asphalt road leading from the Bowen Distribution Center to Victoria House. Cisco Road Company, under the direction of John Woods who built the road in Dangriga, will oversee the project. Initial research indicates that there will be minimal environment impact in the use of asphalt. The public is reminded that these plans are the initial tentative plans and as such, are not yet finalized.

The second step in the road restoration project is meeting with Mayor Elsa Paz and her councilors along with Area Representative Manuel Heredia, Jr. Once both teams reach an agreement the third step will be discussing the plans with the general public. “How can we decide something without first meeting with Mayor Paz, the councilors, and Honorable Heredia. They are after all our leaders and we need to all work together. Of course, once plans have been made more concrete then we discuss it with the public. A public consultation is necessary, in this way the entire island can make a decision as one,” commented Andre Perez, one of the core business owners.

Next week Wednesday, Honorable Smith is scheduled to return to San Pedro to make the final plans before meeting with Prime Minister Musa.

The public meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 12th, 2007. For further information kindly contact Mr. Perez at (610) 1603.
