His Excellency, Sir Colville Young, Governor General of Belize handed over musical equipment for students of the San Pedro R.C. School.

At the Blue Water Grill, His Excellency Sir Colville Young hands over an award to the manager of The Punta Boys.

Last week Friday, San Pedro received a very special visit from one of Belize’s patrons – Governor General Sir Colville Young. Young along with a small contingent visited the Roman Catholic School to deliver some extra special musical instruments and honor some deserving local musicians and artists from the island.

In keeping with his campaign to donate musical instruments, Young’s visit was two fold as the second part of his visit was to honor inspiring local musical talents from San Pedro. The gathering at the San Pedro Sports Complex brought out the San Pedro Roman Catholic School body for a ceremony in his honor. After formalities, the Governor General handed over some much needed musical instruments including bugles, drums, and cymbals to the San Pedro Roman Catholic School. Mrs. Roxani Kay, principal, was the proud recipient on behalf of the school.

The Governor General’s program concentrates in raising funds to support and encourage musical programs in schools which he believes is very important in a child’s development. Over the years Sr. Colville Young has been responsible for donating musical instruments to almost 100 schools and institutions throughout the country, including San Pedro High School. The instruments have included recorders, many of which were featured in the recent festivals of Arts at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts. Also donated have been bugles, drums, cymbals and batons for the popular marching bands which are now a feature of festivals and celebrations of all over our country. In about more ten instances, Sir Colville has been able to donate flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, saxophones and tubas for a full-scale military band.

In the latter part of the afternoon, the contingent was hosted at the Blue Water Grill to honor local musicians for their contribution towards developing music in Ambergris Caye. The honorees included: Dennis Wolfe, Wil and Dale, Barrington Castillo, Island Dog, Tim “Barefoot Skinny” Budd, and the Punta Boys, just to name a few. All were recipients of a certificate of appreciation for their significant contribution to the music and arts world in Ambergris Caye.
