Tiffany Rivero is San Pedro’s top speller!

Andreina Acosta of San Pedro Roman Catholic School nabbed Second Place.

An Ambergris Caye Elementary student, Tiffany Rivero emerged as victor in the Zone 6 Elimination of the Bowen and Bowen Spelling Bee Competition after she “out spelled” representatives from six schools on Tuesday, February 26th, at the Lion’s Den.

The fourteenth consecutive competition kicked off its zone level and saw hundreds of supporters from their respective schools attend the contest to cheer for their school’s speller. There were twelve participants from various schools, including Holy Cross, Island Academy, Ambergris Caye Elementary, San Pedro Roman Catholic, New Horizon and Caye Caulker Roman Catholic primary schools.

The contest was based on a raffle draw and the number the speller chose would be the word on the list they would have to spell.

After several rounds of tough, brain-busting words, Tiffany Rivero of Ambergris Caye Elementary was the best speller of the day and moves on to represent zone six in the nationals. In a quick chat with the winner, Rivero stated, “I am really happy that I won. I will study hard so as to be prepared for the district competition.”

The runner-up winner was Andreina Acosta of San Pedro Roman Catholic School who seemed a bit disappointed but will also get a chance to compete in the National Spelling Bee Competition in the event that Rivero cannot participate. The competition’s officials included: Giselli Flores (Pronouncer), Maria Pollard (Time Keeper), teacher Kate Whitney (Judge), Shawndy Shephard and Principal Enelda Rosado of Caye Caulker R.C. (Scorers).

It is a national competition that each year primary school students can’t wait for. According to a release from Bowen and Bowen, since its inception in 1995, the Coca-Cola National Spelling Bee has had the participation of some seven thousand primary school students. The zone eliminations alone will see 230 plus schools countrywide or equivalent to 500 plus students who will compete among the school’s best spellers. Winners of the zone eliminations will go on to compete in the district finals in April followed by the Grand Finale of the National Spelling Bee on June 6th, 2008 to be held at the Multi-purpose complex in Orange Walk Town.

We wish the girls Tiffany Rivero and Andreina Acosta the best of luck on that endeavor and hope they bring back the spelling bee title to the island!
