Senator Eiden Salazar Jr. is the new Lions President for 2008-2009.

The 2007-2008 fiscal year for the San Pedro Lions Club is drawing to a close. For the 2008-2009 year a ready to work member has accepted to take the reigns of the San Pedro Lions Club. President for this upcoming year is Lion Eiden Salazar.

Lion Salazar joined the Lionistic Family in 2003 and last year, he served as 1st Vice President in the Board of Directors. In his younger years, he was a proud member and President of the Leo’s Club. He is confident that his year as president will be successfully. Throughout these years, Lion Salazar has lived up to the Lion motto “We Serve” and has displayed much fervor, working tirelessly amongst fellow members.

In an interview with The Sun, Lion Salazar stated that he became affiliated with the Lions Club because of the spirit that they evoked, “It was a pride and an honor to be a Lion member. That is why I joined the Leos Club.”

Lion Eiden Salazar will officially assume his new position after the official inauguration ceremonies in early July. Upon taking office, Lion Salazar says that his top priorities will include invigorating the Lionism spirit that the Club seems to have been lost. “The pride was there, the joy was there, it was an honor. That is what I want to restore. That will be the biggest challenge to invigorate the spirit.”

The San Pedro Sun joins the community and the members of the San Pedro Lions Club in congratulating Lion Eiden Salazar in his newly chosen endeavor and wishes him all the best for a successful year.

Lions snag awards at Convention

The SanPedro Lions Club brought home awards for their booth...

...and their float.

Reigning queens were present...

...as were these Lion members.

First place for Float Presentation, second place for Club Presentation and second place for Hospitality Presentation were the awards received by the San Pedro Lions Club on their annual Zone 59 Convention. Held in the village of San Estevan in Orange Walk Town, Lions from San Pedro, Belize City, Belmopan, San Estevan and Chetumal rendezvoused for a weekend full of fun and Lionism spirit.

The festivities began on Friday, May 23rd and had Lions arranging their respective booths for what would be the Hospitality Booth Competition. Adorned with fish and coral, draped in the Lion colors of purple and gold, the San Pedro Lions Club offered tasty island treats to those in attendance. Conch soup, conch fritters, fish balls, conch ceviche, and fresh coconut meat. Booth to booth attendees went, enjoying a taste of what everyone had to offer. For their work and effort, the San Pedro Lions Club brought second place for their booth.

Friday night also brought the humor of members with their various Club Presentations. Skits were the order of the night and San Pedro was the first. Lion Merlene Spain and Lion Kainie Manuel spoke of the services offered by the Lions. For their skit they brought home the second place award.

On Saturday, Lions present were treated to a special seminar where speakers aimed at Energizing the Lions. Yolanda Gomez spoke of Leadership and the special qualities required, Marcos Osorio spoke of the Role of Voluntary Organizations in today’s Society while Lion Leonides Cuellar talked about Lionism.

The night brought glamour and poise as the four beauty queens Susie Rodriguez (San Pedro), Daianie (San Estevan), Delanie Crawford (Belmopan) and Jaselle Young (Belize City) all represented their various clubs in the night’s pageant. At the end of the night, Daianie was crowned Lion Zone 59 Queen.

Sunday brought the day that the entire village got to enjoy – the parade. All four clubs, and Chetumal joined in the fun too, paraded through San Estevan’s streets with their decorated floats. At the end, San Pedro brought first place.

It was a great weekend, enjoyed by all members, friends and those that joined. Next year’s Lions Convention will take place in Belmopan and Lion Carol Cabral of Belize City accepted the post as new Zone Chairman.
