The San Pedro Lion’s Club hosted the Annual Zone 59 National Convention over the weekend. The 32nd annual convention was dedicated to Lion Ali Kisling who has served every Club and zone position during his years of lionism. During the three day event, San Pedro Lion’s Queen Alexis Guererro was crowned as the 2009-2010 Zone 59 Lion’s Queen.
Lion members from various Clubs in the country of Belize and Chetumal City in Mexico began arriving on the island early Friday morning. When the official role call was given on Friday night, Club members from San Estevan, Belmopan, Belize City, Chetumal and San Pedro roared as their Clubs were presented. During the official opening ceremonies, San Pedro Mayor Her Worship Elsa Paz welcomed the members to the island. San Pedro Lion’s President Senator Lion Eiden Salazar expressed that Lions of San Pedro Town were happy to host this year’s convention. Lion Robert “Bobby” Lopez then took to the podium and made a tribute to Lion Ali Kisling. A very sentimental Kisling stated that words could not express how happy and honored he felt, “I am honored, words can’t express my feelings, I am happy that the 32nd annual convention was attributed to my lifelong service to lionism,” he stated.
During the ceremony, Lion Clubs also made a Club presentation reflecting the work of lionism. Guest speaker for the opening ceremonies was Holy Cross Anglican School Local Manager Francis Wilson. Wilson challenged Lion members to follow the footsteps of Lion Kisling and to keep the Lions spirit alive. This she stated can be achieved by inviting others to join such an important organization. Closing remarks were given by Area Representative and Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Honorable Lion Manuel Heredia Jr. after which Lion members and guest visited the various Club hospitality booths.
On Saturday, the agenda was slightly different. During the morning, representative from Quality Assurance Department gave a power point presentation about organizational skills. In the afternoon Lion members got the opportunity to visit Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan Marine Reserve compliments of Ambergris Divers. During the night, gracious and lovely Miss San Pedro Lions Queen Alexis Guererro was crowned as the 2009-2010 Zone 59 Lion Queen. In accepting her crown, Guererro stated that she was honored and promised to carry out her duties to the best of her ability, with respect and always shining the light of lionism in Belize. The highlight of the night was the queen’s cultural presentations. The night proceeded with a dance with the music of Super Furia which went into the wee hours of Sunday morning.
