The beautiful Letty took the crown.

It has been 20 years since San Pedro has a Miss World delegate.

Sanpedrana, 20-year-old Norma Leticia “Letty” Lara won the coveted title of Miss World Belize and is preparing to represent The Jewel in South Africa. Letty, who was Miss San Pedro for the year 2005/06, competed amongst seven other delegates in a packed Andres Campus Civic Center in Corozal Town on Saturday, October 3rd.

Pageant Belize Trainer Margaret Johnson stated that Corozal Town was the first out district town to host the Miss World Belize. Most of the content of the pageant according to Johnson was based around delegate’s performance. “Our pageant had to be one that is more of a performance, so our stage had to be a complete runway in which the delegates had to work out their outfit,” stated Johnson. Competing against eight other delegates from around the country, Letty wowed the judges and won the coveted title which she knew she would take.

Letty is now preparing to represent Belize at the Miss World Pageant 2009 which is scheduled to take place on December 12th in the South African capital of Johannesburg. According to Johnson, the actual competition starts on November 7th in London, England where all the delegates will arrive and the world will get an opportunity to get a glimpse of the 120 participants.

Letty told The San Pedro Sun in an interview that not only is she happy, but she is also excited to represent Belize in such a prestigious pageantry. “I am proud and honored to represent my country in Africa and I am looking forward to meeting new people and learning more about their country and culture,” stated Lara. Lara is scheduled to leave on November 6th where she will be engaged in a packed one month of activities. One of the highlights for Letty will be the opportunity to attend the raffling of the 2010 World Cup games schedule.

Before Letty gets to Africa, the Pageant Belize Organization is spearheading a massive fundraiser to help finance the expenses of Belize’s participation at Miss World Pageant. Anyone wishing to assist financially can get in contact with Belize’s Miss World delegate at 629-5676 or make direct deposits to an account number that will be made public next week. In addition, on October 24th, Pageant Belize will be hosting an event that will be open to the public. Those details will also be announced next week, as well.

It has taken 20 years for the Miss World Belize title to return to San Pedro Town. The last Sanpedrana to have won the crown was Miss Martha Badillo in 1989.
