Carnaval Fair brings in Carnaval 2010!
For the first time in the history of Carnaval, the SPTC held a block party in honor of the commencement of the Carnaval 2010 festivities on the island. Throughout the night, booths decked out in full Carnaval themes lined Barrier Reef Drive peddling their delicious food, drinks and item fares. Purples, golds, greens, reds and sparkles shone through the night, and the festive mood was definitely in the air. Judges were tasked to choose the best food, drink and booths, and while it was a hard decision, the winners emerged as: Lions – Best Booth, San Pedro Junior College – Best Food (Rainbow Rice), and Caliente – Best Drink (Carnaval Crush).

The night was enlivened with dances performed by the San Pedro Dance Company, Barbara’s Dance Group and musical interludes by Rompe Raja. Another highlight of the night was the crowning of Miss Carnaval 2010 – Miss Vicky Balam who took the most votes and won the title. It was definitely a great beginning of what we hope will be a long standing tradition.

Carnaval 2010

The flurry of the three days of Carnaval has come and gone. The paint splatters and egg shells on the cobblestone streets remind us of what fun was had by children and adults on Sunday, Monday and especially on Tuesday. Carnaval is a local island tradition from decades aback, and includes painting and the traditional comparsas (dance groups) who work in trying to raise funds.

This year, less people were seen out painting and less people participated in the comparsas. However, those that did partake in the events had an absolute blast enjoying every minute of the festivity. From Sunday to Tuesday, revelers were out in full force as were the dancers. Dancers’ lyrics, costumes and moves showcased the amount of fun everyone had.

The San Pedro Town Council had prizes for the best comparsas. Winning in the Best Senior category was Miss Flora’s Posse while second place went to Rompe Raja. Winning in the Junior category was the Ambergris Caye Elementary School.

Another great year of Carnaval was celebrated. See you all next year for more painting and dancing fun.
