New San Pedro Lions Club Inductees

April 18, 1998, was declared as Lions Club Worldwide Induction Day. The Lions Club was originally founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones. Locally the San Pedro Lions Club celebrated with their own Induction Ceremony at the Lions Den. The San Pedro Lions Club was founded in 1975. For 23 years the club was opened to only male members, while women served as ladies' auxiliary. This years ceremony was definitely history in the making as four women were inducted into the club as Lions.

San Pedro Lions Club President, Lion Alfredito Alamilla gave the welcome address followed by Vice District Governor, Lion Angel Nuñez, who led the induction ceremony. The four women inducted were Carmita Eiley sponsored by Lion Herman Alamilla, Rosita Alamilla sponsored by Lion Alex Eiley, Nita Marin sponsored by Lion Manuel Ancona, and Flora Ancona sponsored by Lion Betito Marin. The two male inductees were, Roberto Toriz sponsored by Lion Betito Marin, and Larry Grider sponsored by Lion Herman Alamilla.

Guest speaker, Lion Baldemar Graniel announced, "Tonight is the beginning of our bright future," in keeping with the international theme, "Proud Past, Bright Future." The Lions Motto, "We Serve," was mentioned as well as a reminder of the Lions objectives to bring health to the less fortunate. An official Proclamation was given by Mayor of San Pedro, Lion Alberto Nuñez and a vote of thanks by Lion Beto Marin closed the ceremony. It was stated that membership stands at 48 members now, and new members are always welcome. A dinner and dance followed to celebrate the occasion.
