Celebrating 150 years of beautiful San Pedro







This year the San Pedro 150th Celebration Committee has made great efforts to push the San Pedro Day celebrations. Events leading to the 29th started at the beginning of this month.

June 1st to the 5th was Primary School Museum Week. Children were invited to the museum to learn more about San Pedro's history which has not been documented extensively. Miriam Graniel was the winner of the Town Board sponsored, writing competition based on an essay on life in San Pedro in former times. Miss Graniel is a student of San Pedro High School.

On Thursday, June 18th the senior citizens of San Pedro enjoyed a beautiful evening that was dedicated to them. The San Pedro 150th Celebrations Committee held a Senior Citizens Reminiscence Evening where they participated in a discussion of old San Pedro. Refreshments and transportation were provided.An art exhibition took place at the Lion's Den on Friday, June 19th. Professional and amateur artists set up their art work for the open public to admire and buy if they wished.

Nightly novenas have been taking place at 7:15 p.m. at the Roman Catholic Church. The novenas will end the 29th of June. Each night after the novenas there are fireworks displays.

On June 25th Dr. Herman Smith presented an Archeological Talk at the San Pedro Town Hall. His presentation was about the Mayas and the ruins here on the island.

June 27th to the 29th the Ambergris Museum will hold Museum Special Celebration Days. People may visit for free. The Museum is inviting the public to go in and learn about the island's history.

On Friday, June 27th, the opening ceremonies of the 150th Anniversary of San Pedro will start at 7:30 p.m. at the old football field. Mayor Alberto Nuñez will give the opening speech. Other speakers for the evening will be guest speaker, Lita Khron from Channel 5 and Patty Arceo, PUP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South. Vellie's Dance group will be performing cultural dances and Vanya Vasquez, Miss San Pedro 1997/1998, will recite a poem written by Don Lucio. Mechanical games at the grounds will provide thrilling entertainment to all the "kiddies". Caribbean Roots and San Pedro's very own, Unity Band will be providing live musical entertainment from 10:00 p.m. until-

A fishing tournament will take place on June 28th. Caribbean Roots and the Unity Band will be at the football field once again providing lively tunes all day long. Presentation of awards to the winners of the fishing tournament will take place at 2:00 p.m. A Grand Dance will start at 10:00 p.m. continuing into the early morning hours.

On Sunday, June 29th, Dia de San Pedro, the sounding of the siren will take place at 3:00 a.m. and the mañanitas (serenading) will follow at 4:00 a.m. At 5:00 a.m. breakfast at the Lion's Den will be served. The boat procession will start at 6:30 a.m. At 5:30 p.m. the Procession of Señor San Pedro will begin with music provided by La Serenita Band.

Take pride and honor in the celebration of San Pedro's 150th birthday. Be a part of the celebrations, be part of La Isla Bonita. "Del sudor del Mestizo se creo este paraiso-San Pedro. From the sweat of the Mestizo, this paradise was created-San Pedro."
