Caye Caulker Marine Reserve Opened







At official ceremonies on Saturday, July 18th the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve was officially declared opened. The reserve is approximately 100 acres and is located to the north of Caye Caulker. The development of the reserve was a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Tourism & Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Fisheries Department, PACT, and the Caye Caulker community.

Mr. Durando Montero of PACT commented "PACT will provide technical assistance towards the management of the reserve wherever possible."

Minister Henry Young emphasized the need for Caye Caulker community to be fully involved with the marine reserve in order to educate their children and themselves on its importance. Minister Young further commented , "- it is training and education that is going to decide how well Caye Caulker progresses in the tourism industry."

The Director of Tourism, Mr. Kevin Gonzalez, gave the closing remarks and concluded the ceremonies by presenting the Caye Caulker Tour Guide Association with a marine radio and antenna for their marine operations.
