The San Pedro Lions Club had the pleasure of hosting the Governor of Lions District 59 last Sunday as part of his official visit to the clubs. Accompanying Governor Alberto Mahler was Cabinet Secretary Estelito Loria and District Queen Miss Isela Duran.

During the meeting Governor Mahler urged the members of the club to continue their good work keeping Lions in Belize alive. He also extended an invitation to the members to make an effort, if possible, to attend the International Convention that will be held in San Diego, California. One of his main goals is to take at least one hundred Belizean Lions to this convention to make Belize visible. The Governor also reminded the San Pedro Lions about the upcoming District Convention in San Estevan, Orange Walk to be held April 16th - 18th, 1999. One of the highlights during this convention will be the induction of new Lion members throughout the five clubs. Lions International has set aside April 17th as World Lions Induction Day. All prospective members will be inducted during this night of the convention.

Governor Mahler's biggest news was the report of a new Lions Club. Belmopan Lions Club is in its final stage of sponsoring Belize's newest Lions Club in Punta Gorda. He also reported that in an effort to recruit more members, Lions International will be waiving the entrance fee for all Lioness' and spouses of Lions wishing to join the club until December of 1999.

President of the San Pedro Lions Club, Ruben Gonzalez received a plaque of appreciation by Miss Duran on behalf of the Boy Scouts Association for a donation made to them by the San Pedro Lions Club. After a question and answer period, a typical island fish lunch was served.

The Governor and his entourage had to take a 1:00 p.m. flight back to Belize City to attend another meeting. Joining them was San Pedro Lions Secretary, Felix Ayuso. The meeting was to finalize plans for the District Convention in San Estevan. Lion Felix Ayuso attended on behalf of Lion Flora Ancona, San Pedro Convention Chairperson who had a previous engagement. The meeting was held at the Belize City Eye Clinic and attending were a large group from San Estevan, Belize City and one member from San Pedro. During this in-depth meeting the final plans for the convention were discussed with a mutual agreement as follows:

1. The annual Queen Pageant Competition will not be held this year. Instead, it was agreed that the queen of the host convention site automatically becomes the District 59 Queen. Nevertheless all clubs are urged to present their queens during the convention. The San Estevan Lions Club presented their candidate and future District 59 Queen, Miss Ariani Samora.

2. The usual cultural presentation by each club, which in the past has been judged and a winner selected, will not take this usual course. Instead all presentations will be awarded a plaque for their participation.

3. The ever popular hospitality booth judging will take a similar course as in the past. A few different ways of judging were suggested. Judging will be done during the ceremonies where judges will have a first hand look and explanation of the goods. The booth will not be judged by the amount of people visiting it. Again clubs will depict goods from each individual location.

4. Prizes will be awarded for the best float and best organized group. With regards to best organized group the amount of members participating will not influence the judging.

The San Pedro Lions Club will be revealing the name of their Lions Queen shortly as well as all information with regards to the convention.
