I know the occupancy rate for Belize in general runs about 40%.

Does anyone know the occupancy rates for Caye Caulker only?

The last occupancy numbers I saw for Caulker were around 34%. Because there are so many small guest houses and hotels there, some of which may not be included in BTB surveys, I'm not sure how accurate that number is.

The rate numbers come from tax reporting in a system with little enforcement and zero oversight. figure it out.

I appreciate that the BTB numbers may be off, but the question is which way. There may be an incentive to under report occupancy to avoid taxes, but on the other hand the BTB numbers (or so I've been told) are based on reports from the larger resorts and hotels, not from every little guesthouse and obscure hotel, so that could mean that occupancy is overstated. It probably averages out, but at any rate common sense tells us that occupancy rates in Belize are and have never been anything to write home about.

Just from personal experience. My hotel on Caye Caulker runs at almost 80%.

I'm curious Lan..who told you that BTB only reports on the larger resorts. I've been assured that they're reporting is consistent and includes all.

I believe the BTB itself has stated that their reports do not include all of the 500-some properties in Belize. Why don't you ask them and report back here, Jesse? We'll be waiting.

Already done that quite some time ago Lan. They absolutely claim that they include eveyone. Who told you otherwise?

80% annual occupancy is outstanding, not just for Belize but for anywhere in the world. I believe London is the only major market in the world where hotels traditionally have averaged over 80% occupancy year-round, though New York City was close. I believe though that both have slipped under 80% in the current economic recession.
