Millionaire businessman John McAfee's Orange Walk estate was raided by GSU personnel in early May during an operation in which it was believed that drugs and illegal firearms were being housed on the premises. In the wake of the search, McAfee and the Belize Police Department became embroiled in a highly publicized tiff which eventually ended up in the international media. Despite the widely reported fallout, the antivirus software guru has a long history of donating much needed equipment to the police department and today the hatchet was formally buried when McAfee handed over a handsome donation of items to the San Pedro Police Formation. Included among the equipment are forty Vipertek stun guns, twelve professional batons, a cache of pepper spray, heavy-duty metal handcuffs, flashlights, metal detectors, hydration backpacks, as well as a small vessel with an outboard engine. The generous contribution comes in light of an increase in criminal activity on the island, a concern which has raised the ire of the local business community. The donation coincides with another initiative by the Belize Tourism Board, which provided twelve Motorola handheld radios to the department. In an effort to address the escalating situation additional officers will be deployed to San Pedro and a total of ten surveillance cameras will also be installed in strategic areas of the island.

If we can continue to lobby for a fully manned police department I do think it could make a huge difference in the crime situation. A full complement would be 100 officers. Of course decent housing, room in schools for their kids, adequate equipment etc would be good incentives to work on the Caye. We should also lobby for a reasonable and adequate additional allowance for officers that live on the island as this is an expensive place to live. If we could make this a desirable place to live and work that offers decent additional pay perhaps we could have our choice of good officers and enjoy some harmony and improve the living conditions and lifestyles of all hardworking, honest people on the island.

Particularly a decent wage......you do usually "get what you pay for".

If we hire local police we don't need a barracks.
If men live at home with their families they tend to be happier and get in less mischief.
I'm all for better pay and higher standards - and for keeping the guys who do a good job right here on the island as long as they perform and want to stay!

Mr. John McAfee was more than pleased to help out the community of La Isla Bonita which he calls home. His donation included equipment for the police officers, housing for five police officers and a boat for transportation. Equipment donation included tasers, handcuffs, hydration packs, flashing lights, metal detectors, pistol belts, pepper spray and batons, to name a few.
On behalf of Minister Heredia, Mr. Kevin Gonzalez, presented a short speech to those in attendance and also presented six of twelve Motorola hand-held radios for the department. Assistant Superintendent Vienie Robinson delivered the vote of thanks after the official presentation of equipment which was carried out by Mr. John McAfee, Mayor Daniel Guerrero and Mr. Kevin Gonzalez.

Concerns at public meeting on crime yields positive results
When speaking to The San Pedro Sun, Mayor Daniel Guerrero explained that after the public meeting on Tuesday October 30th, many people expressed willingness to assist both the SPTC and the Police Department on the island to address the crime situation that has spiked out of control. One of the first persons to reach out was John McAfee, renowned businessman and part-time resident of northern Ambergris Caye. "Due to concerns of the people in the last meeting we promised to go into first gear. Mr. John McAfee called me immediately after hearing about the concerns as it related to crime�he came very generously and said he will equip the police force in San Pedro with anything that he could at the time and is willing to give even more. He has promised the Council that his boat is available anytime for the Police Department if they need it. He is also willing to host all five police officers in five air-conditioned rooms at his establishment and transportation for them will be free of cost via Coastal Express," said the Mayor.
As part of equipping the police department, McAfee made a very substantial equipment donation. 40 assorted Vipertek Stun guns, 7 SCHRADE SWAT batons, 3 SCHRADE Professional SWAT batons, 2 Security Pro batons, 60 assorted brands and types of pepper spray, 46 assorted heavy duty metal handcuffs, 12 Lumen Premium Led flashlights, 7 streetwise metal detectors, 5 High Sierra brand hydration backpacks and a battery charger were amongst the arsenal of equipment donated. According to Mayor Guerrero, the donation is only the beginning, with more to come as promised by McAfee in a private meeting hosted at the SPTC building. McAfee said that "A society without law is not a society� laws are necessary to curb the negative aspect of the 'human animal.' Law however is useless without the ability to enforce them� much of the donation is based on the psychological aspect of the weaponry," said McAfee. A small vessel complete with engine was also handed to the SP Police Department by McAfee for the use of the department as they see it fit.

McAfee, the Generous, Pray For Us
You may remember John McAfee - he's the American who was in the news in May when the GSU raided his compound in Orange Walk and found lots of guns.
Since then, he's made enormous claims in the local and international media. These include various threats supposedly made against him by police and other nefarious forces.
So imagine our surprise today when we saw in the San Pedro sun that Mcafee made a lavish donation to police in that island town yesterday.
The Sun reports that McAfee donated 40 Stun guns, 7 SWAT batons, Professional SWAT batons, 2 Security Pro batons, 60 assorted brands and types of pepper spray, 46 assorted heavy duty metal handcuffs, 12 Premium Led flashlights, 7 streetwise metal detectors, 5 High Sierra brand hydration backpacks and a battery charger amongst an arsenal of equipment.
He also handed over a small vessel with engine to the San Pedro Police.
The donation comes out of a public meeting on crime held last week in San Pedro. Mayor Daniel Guerrero explained that after the meeting McAfee reached out with an offer of equipment as well as use of his boat, and apartments on northern Ambergris Caye.
An article on McAfee which was published yesterday in the US writes of him walking around with a holstered gun on his compound in san Pedro - and stating that he can't leave his home after dark.
He is also quoted as saying that "Almost everybody (in Belize) has gone through periods of starvation. You won't find a single person who has not at one point lost their hair. This is a sign of advanced malnutrition."
For balance, the writer Jeff Wise also notes that earlier this year he quote, "became convinced (that McAfee) was a compulsive liar if not an outright psychopath."
