Arriving March 20th to AC with my brother who has never traveled outside the the US. Suggestions for budget hotel just outside town maybe? I'm trying to cheer him up (just broke up with gf). Would like suggestions for fun hangout bars(casual.. maybe he could meet some girls to cheer him up..... Not for me.... I'm sure there aren't :p any gay hangouts..haha) Would also like some advice on day snorkel trips. Thanks for any help.

If you're looking for places to have a drink and hang out I wouldn't want some place out of town I'd want to be right in the middle.

Snorkeling: Alfonse Graniel, L'il Alfonse under "Goods & Services" menu above, phone: 614-5450; 226-3537; great guy & guide, wonderful with people & fish; ask him about other snorkeling sites after you visit Hol Chan & Shark Ray Alley
and/or
on sailboat: Geraldo Badillo, 226-2264, fun and serene
You can book both after you arrive.

No personal knowledge of "downtown" hotels.

My favorite place is the Paradise Resort Hotel at the near north end of town. It has very economical rooms, max goes to $130, down to some in the upper $70's (I think - we get the one with the kitchenette for $130 - Its nice and roomy). Its a pretty and peaceful place, has a restaurant and bar but they close about 5:00 p.m. For your social life, you'll want to amble down the beach a couple minutes. There are plenty of places to go to. Also, a really busy place at Wet Willies, if you like loud. That's a few steps further north. There's plenty to do. You'll have no lack of things to do. Bottom Time, down by the Holiday Hotel arranges snorkeling. I've never tried it, as I am a diver. Have a wonderful trip. As you can see, we all love it here!

Just a quick note about Coconuts........ The bar is now called Lucifer's, and it's been completely redone. It's still a good place to hang out. The girls (Ada & Margie) are still tending bar and a lot of locals and visitors still stop by. We just got back from three weeks in Belize and would check in there every day. Have a good trip and just remember not to try to do too much in too short of a time. The magic of Belize is it's laid back pace and friendly people.

Finnblast....I don't guess I was really hinting at anything in particular ; ). As crockhunter says the bar is now called Lucifers...does that tell you anything? ; 0). Let's just say you just never know what might happen at Coconuts...anything from skinnydipping in the pool, to protecting your gonads from Condor the dog wink . Long story and I can't mention names but it was pretty funny........for something a "little" more sane you could try El Divino at Banana Beach which is a great place and there is also a small beach bar next door to Banana at Mata Rocks.
