I took a picture of a Mennonite family from a boat on the Northern River, and I'll swear they posed for me, women 'n all. They certainly didn't flinch from the camera.

Mennonites do not hold the same views on picture taking that the Amish hold. Generally Mennonites will not raise any objection. great picture.
I can never remember which is better . . . safe? . . . or sorry?

Elbert - is that a true 400mm lens, or is the 400 expressed relative to a full-frame sensor (as is commonly the case)? If the latter, then on your camera (with a 1.5 cropped sensor) it would be an effective 600mm. I also have a 400mm, but on my camera that IS 400mm.
With the introduction of cropped sensors there is a lot of confusion over focal lengths, from all manufacturers.

very true,, photos posted on flickr have an option to see the EXIF camera data. when i use my 300mm f4D lens with my cropped sensor, the EXIF states it equals 450mm in film daze! a bonus for me, altho, it's like looking thru a straw! but the bonus is negative using a wide angle lens,, bummer there but i have adapted.

I'm not sure of the detail of how it works with other manufacturers, but with Canon all lenses are expressed in terms of their 35mm film equivalent, even if they can't be used on such a camera. My camera has a FF sensor, and no lens designed for a cropped sensor can usefully be used on it (it gives severe vignetting). Some of them protrude too far into the body and will actually cause damage, even though the mount is superficially the same.
I don't know how Nikon have achieved with their new D700 FF camera the ability to fit any lens, with the camera sensing when the lens is only "illuminating" the central part of the sensor and amending the image seen appropriately. Not just very clever but seemingly impossible.

Elbert, are you saying that you are taking photographs of people you believe don't want to be photographed and then using those pictures to promote tourism? Do you equate seeing another culture, in this instance the Mennonites, in Belize on par with a trip to the zoo? This isn't the impression I had of you.

i am not aware of any nikon lens that is limited to the ff sensor only. or any vignetting occurs? have not heard anything like that. each new 'breakthru' from the manufactures always amazes me! yes, each time i set a goal for a upgrade, they toss out something new like the D700. i'll be happy with a D200!

Until the D700 came out, the only FF DSLR made by Nikon was the D3, and that was only released recently. All other Nikon DSLRs have 1.5 cropped sensors, so the issue has probably never arisen. Canon have made FF sensor DSLRs for some years. My 5D has been around for over three years.
But yes, there are Nikkor lenses that cannot be used on a D3. Only the D700 has this additional capability (not that you'd want to use it, as it reduces the available resolution to around 5mp).
