Even lower end metal detectors will discriminate between ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

There is a place on AC that I have found several Spanish coins (Turreals) without a metal detector. So, there is stuff to find on and off the beach.

If customs confiscates it, pick it up when you leave. Tell them you didn't know it was a problem. They might hold it for you (might not also).
