The Belize Audubon Society has announced that several N-G-Os will be
presenting the Lamanai Room Declaration. The release says that the
declaration is a call for action from the Government of Belize on key
environmental issues. These issues include protected areas designation and
de-reservation, unsustainable coastal development, protection of Belize's
natural resources through protection of territorial integrity and
unsustainable tourism. The organizations involved are the Belize Audubon
Society, Belize Tourism Industry Association, Association of Protected Area
Management Organizations, and the Society for the Promotion of Education
and Research along with many other N-G-Os. According to the
organizations, the public's participation is the key to the success of the
declaration. All are invited to the Endorsement Day and to participate in
presentations on the issues addressed within the declaration and to
endorsement of the final declaration. This year marks the tenth
anniversary of the Lamanai Room Declaration; a declaration spearheaded by
the Belize Audubon Society and the Belize Tourism Industry Association
which was signed on August 13, 19-97 by thirty organizations and citizens
calling for action by the Government on four key development issues. The
Lamanai Room Declaration issues were unsustainable coastal development,
tourism, logging and fisheries. The presentation of the declaration will
be held this Thursday at theRadisson Fort George Hotel.
