Harriettee gave some good advice ,all kidding aside, that's one of the hardest things to get across to new underwater photographers.
Hold your hand out flat with fingers together like a salute posture , now look at it from where your thumb is ...doesn't look like much does it...now turn it to see your palm...hea its a hand!
shoot it quick before it swims off. :-)
