Chiquibul Chapters Part 1: Finding Gold Inside the Chiquibul Forest
Inside the Chiquibul, that's where Love News team reporter Hipolito Novelo and video editor Shayanne Dena travelled. It was part of a trip organized by Friends for Conservation (FCD) for the Belize Network of NGOs (BNN). The purpose of the trip was to visit the locations where Boiton Minerals Limited (BML) has been conducting mining and exploration activities. BML is looking for more gold inside the Chiquibul but their activities, the FCD says, has put the Chiquibul Headwater in direct threat. It's a huge environmental concern because the water you drink comes from the Chiquibul.
Boiton Minerals Limited Clarifies its Position on Gold Mining in the Chiquibul
There is a significant amount of gold inside the Chiquibul- that is what Boiton Minerals Limited has determined and what the company's environmental consultant told Love News today. Over the weekend, Love News visited BML's gold mining activities deep inside the Chiquibul. The trip was facilitated by Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) who is accusing BML and putting the Chiquibul headwaters in direct threat. The trip was supposed to include a visit to where FCD says that BML built a new road- something that BML completely refutes. However, BML has been found in breach of its environmental compliance plan and the company is currently negotiating with the government.
