My wife used Skin So Soft two weeks ago in Panama. We were on the Caribbean side at Portobelo and Bocas Del Toro. The chitras were around but I wouldn't call them bad(you could count on 6-10 bites a day if there was no breeze). S-O-S seemed to work the best of several remedies she brought along. Trouble is it's messy. It leaves grease marks on everything, at least temporarily. I don't suppose baby oil is any different.
Pick your poison I guess!
Any hints on treating the bites once they get you?

Sand flies drive me crazy - but nobody else in my family is bothered by the bites. You do not get accustomed to sandfly bites as you typically do (eventually) with mosquito bites.
Avoidance, baby oil and the final form of avoidance - air conditioning. Seal up the hotel room and freeze them out.
As far as treating the bites - just the usual bendryl "after bite" type stuff is about all you can do.
Hopefully the skin so soft and staying in during the worst hours will help.
My husband had some awful batlass fly bites a few months ago and the doctor prescribed some kind of antiseptic/anti itch wash along with an oral antihistamine.

Avon Bug Guard works great and isn't oily like the Skin So Soft. They have a sunscreen/bug repellant combination, or just the bug juice. I used that, and Cactus Juice in Roatan with great success. I've never had much trouble with bugs in Belize, but Roatan is a different story... Avon has a new version that includes Picaridin, which also works well for mosquitos. All versions are available on-line.

So, I assume the Cactus Juice is a product name, right? Does Avon make it or someone else?

lavender soap for showers, lavender baby oil for sun, peppermint oil for any bites. Had the best bug free visit ever - and I've visited Belize 5 times this last year & have been vacationing there for over 6 years, hitting high bug & low bug seasons. My daughter lives on SP, got this advice from a friend of her's that has lived in the area for years. It worked for me.

I bought bars of English Lavender soap & Johnson & Johnson makes a baby oil with lavender - found both at Walgreens. Peppermint oil is ~$10 at The Body Shop, or try a natural foods type store. I did not need the peppermint oil, I didn't get bit !! a first for me. I showered with the soap, put the baby oil on in the shower (wasn't too greasy that way). I just did that every shower, it was like armor for me.
