XIIth: I also stay at the Palms and like to get out early to exercise. Going south along the beach, it's about 3 miles to Victoria House and back. Going north to the cut and then through town and back is also about 3 miles. I enjoy the northern route because it gives me an opportunity to watch the town come alive--the people going to work, the children going to school (during the season), and the families getting their days going. Then top off the workout with a stop at Ruby's for cinnamon buns--more calories than I burn shocked but worth the treat. Hope you enjoy your stay. By the way, I get out about 7:00 to beat the heat. And yes, Law, I certainly don't make my quota of imbibing! Can't have everything but I do love San Pedro. Sam

My goal is to be in the water 45 min. after we land on Thursday. That requires a concerted effort by the divemaster to meet us at the airport and get our stuff over to the dive shop. This has become a tradition we don't want to break. Hope we don't wear out the divemaster even before we get in the water. He's a real sport! Our nickname is "hardcore."

Sam, nice point about watching everyone start their day. I don't usually wear a shirt when I run but if I'm going to be running through town should I?

Yes, the Belizeans are fairly modest, and a shirt would be appropriate.

I'd say that's up to you. Plenty of women wear a sports bra when running the beach and there are plenty of belizean and non belizean men who run without a shirt.

You're gonna need to wake up wayyyy earlier than 9 to get your run in - it's hot as heck! Ha ha!

When I was there (Feb, 2005) I had to do a 14 mile training run (for a marathon) - I started at 7am nearly melted! Fortunately we had a pool (Exotic Caye) that felt SO good!!! I ran from EC south to the park (?), then back to the ferry, then back again until I got in the mileage (I have a GPS unit).

Watch out for the taxis!

(Oh, and I'm from South GA, so I know heat & humidity like you do - but I still melted wink )

Good info to have! I will be at the Palms in late August and need to get in 2-3 hours walking in training for a 60-mile walk for breast cancer in September. Are the routes safe for a single woman walking alone (esp in early a.m.)?
