Thanks Travel Queen, that post was most interesting, wow! it turned nasty. I am from Europe, but i do like to abide by local custom and it seems that its not alright so I will bring my bikini tops with me and save the peace of Ambergris Caye, no biggy. thanks very much.

I thought about another question, we are staying about 3 and half miles from san pedro, can you tell me about any local restaurants and bars that far from town? would we have to go into town everyday to eat in restaurants or go out for a drink? By the way I love this site its cool.

Yes it is frowned upon by Americans. In fact, approximately half of every American couple frowns upon it, the other half doesn't. wink
But more to the point, the people to be accomodated are the citizens, and it is not their custom. When you (or me) are in their backyard, we should play by their rules.
I know you will enjoy your stay, this is a wonderful place for most to visit.

Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt

Sue, I can pretty much guess where you are staying (I live in that area) and I really don't see a problem removing your top to sunbathe by the pool or at the end of the dock. (I'm going to have to hide this thread from my husband) There is no one around there that you will offend plus it is private property. You might make the groundskeepers day! When in town or around other tourists and islanders, it is best to keep those puppies contained. It is against the law.

There are no restaurants this far south, you will have to travel a couple miles north to eat.

I feel very safe driving to and from town by myself, you should have no problems with your group.

Sue - Day 1 of our first trip my husband swam out to the end of Ramon's pier and hung out (catching his breath) yakking with a very large woman with very large....children??? (He did eventually catch his breath!) I could care less - he could care less, but respecting local mores is the most important thing. Let your conscience be your guide.

For eats that far south, try BC's 2 at Caribe Island or Sand Bar. For groceries, Lagniappe can stock your fridge for you or Island Supermarket is on your way south, where the cobblestone ends and the sand road begins. The main concern that far south on a golf cart is the condition of the roads. They were fine one day, but the next day almost impassable (sp?) in some spots after rain. We were there 7/20.

we Americans didn't care if we went topless, so we did. We got a lot of grief for it from the locals. I was told by said locals that it was expected from Europeans but not from Americans. But, after one afternoon on a deserted beach topless, we found that the whole town knew about it. (where were they spying from ? ha.) We just wanted minimal tan lines, not to become a spectacle. It's no big deal to lay out on a deserted beach or poolside in the U.S. - topless. We're not that uptight. When I choose to lay out topless on San Pedro now it is on the roof of the 3 story home where I stay.

when in doubt...do without
