FYI: they is such a thing as fake conch pearls that are made out of the shell of the conch, so buyer beware. Now I am not suggesting that there is or ever has been anyone in Belize that would take advantage of a tourist, so do not infer anything into this comment that is not intended.

I searched for about 3 years 30 years ago to find four pearls the size and color I wanted to make ear rings, pendant and a ring. My wife thought they turned out beautiful, although I thought a couple of rods and pen international reels would have been more beautiful. laugh

PS; here is a web page of some interest. I do not totally agree with eveything on it, but it has some good points. They are many other web pages you can look at for info on conch pearls. http://www.jewelrygenius.com/conchpearls.html

hmmm ....my conch pearl must be worth a small fortune...anyway those price are ridiculous...oysters pearls are worth more than a conch pearl...just find you some fishermen and you will get a good price on the conch pearls...they are pretty but that's about it.....

My dad has worked in a fishing cooperative in Belize for over 30 years and of all the conch brought in by the Belizean fishermen, he managed to save me 4 pearls - two small pink, one orangey, one large cream colored.
I have always wondered how many must be out there but my presumption was that there can't be many. Back in those days, the conch were plentiful, and huge. I can't see where there can be an abundance of them now, especially since the conch fishery is extremely stressed and the conch brought in by the fishermen are smaller and the catch is significantly less than "the old days."

Just to let ya'll know...I am a resident! Hi, GailM, real conch pearls are more rare than oyster pearls, and yes, only about 1 in 10,000 conch have a pearl. Loads of fake ones on the market!!! Technically, it is not a pearl but a "calcium concretion". Took Sunday off so sorry about any replies. Okay, Peter???

Special this week is a butterscotch round pearl, 13.48 carats at $1,000 US. Serious inquiries can e-mail me! Later all.
